Sunday we returned to the Bio Granja La Real for a natural dye workshop.
El domingo volvimos a la Bio Granja La Real para un taller de tintes naturales.
We begun with some theory, talking about the harm synthetic dyes cause, how to prepare fabric and yarn for dyeing and how to mordant it so that the dyes can attach to the fabric. I showed some samples of colours I have achieved in the past and designs you can make with some simple shibori techniques.
Empezamos con la parte teórica, hablando del daño que hacen los tintes sintéticos, como preparar las telas para teñir con plantas y los pasos para que se fijen mejor los tintes. Vimos unas muestras de los colores que he logrado con plantas y los diseños que se pueden conseguir con técnicas de shibori.
Then we went directly to the fun part: the dyeing. Like Saturday though, I forgot to take photos of many of the steps so we have the before and after.
Y luego nos fuimos directamente a la parte divertida: el proceso de teñir. Igual que el sábado, olvidé sacar fotos de varios de los pasos o sea que os dejo con las fotos de antes y después.
While the fabric was dyeing or drying we took a little walk to pick some plants for some additional projects. We printed with leaves, decorated some rocks and tried a different dye technique with flowers.
Mientras las telas se “cocían” y secaban, nos fuimos de paseo y recogimos plantas para usar en unos proyectos adicionales. Hicimos impresiones con hojas, decoramos rocas y probamos una técnica diferente de teñido, usando flores.
The Bio Granja gave us some wild carrots from their land and I decided to see what colour it might produce, after 45 minutes it looked fairly unsuccessful but I dipped a bit of fabric in and I’m in love with the results. I’ll share them soon.
La Bio Granja nos regaló unas zanahorias salvajes de su tierra y decidí experimentar y ver si ofrecía algún color. Después de 45 minutos no se veía muy prometedor pero metí un trozo de tela y estoy encantada con el resultado. Ya compartiré fotos pronto.
I don’t know what happened, perhaps I was just enjoying the experience too much but I didn’t take a single photo from about 1pm on so I hope that visiting Neus, Ishtar and Hélène’s blogs will give you a glimpse of the delicious meal my Mum and sister prepared, the yummy lemon merengue pie that Hélène made and the wonderful, relaxing workshop Ishtar and Neus gave in the afternoon.
As I expected, this was a unique and very special weekend. It wasn’t without a lot of work and a few hiccups like delayed and missed flights. But having friends in your home, sharing a weekend with a lovely and creative women in such a peaceful and beautiful setting is worth any effort we put in. Thank you to everyone that participated, most of all to Neus and Ishtar for coming to Mallorca, sharing their creativity and warming my heart.
No sé que pasó pero después de la 1 no saqué ni una sola foto. Espero que Neus, Ishtar y Hélène compartan fotos es su blog para que veáis la deliciosa comida que prepararon mi madre y hermana, la rica tarta de limón que trajo Hélène y el creativo taller que impartieron Ishtar y Neus por la tarde.
Como esperaba, este fue un fin de semana muy especial y original. Hubo mucho trabajo, y unas cuantas complicaciones, como retrasos y un vuelo perdido, pero tener tan buenos amigos en casa y compartir un fin de semana con ellos en un lugar tan relajado y bonito vale la pena el esfuerzo. Gracias a todos los que participaron, sobre todo a Ishtar y a Neus, por venir a Mallorca, compartir su creatividad y por alegrarme el corazón.
Our workshop was amazing and I wanted to share some photos of the event that I was lucky enough to share with Ishtar Olivera, Neus from All Washi Tape and a group of wonderful women who joined us at the Bio Granja La Real. The lovely stamp above was created especially for the event by the very talented Ishtar.

Saturday began with my gift tag workshop. Unfortunately I forgot to take photos so here are some of the finished pieces drying in the sun. All that was left was for them to be sanded.
El sábado empezamos con mi taller de etiquetas de barro. Desafortunadamente olvidé sacar fotos o sea que os dejo con esta imagen de algunas etiquetas secándose. Lo único que les faltaba era ser lijadas.
We continued with Ishtar’s stamp carving workshop.

This is one of my favourite photos of the event. We were lucky to have among us 3 generations: Moni, her mum, her sister and her 2 children. I’m not sure who enjoyed the event more, them, creating or me, watching them share this time together.
Esta es una de mis fotos favoritas de todo el evento. Tuvimos la suerte de contar con la presencia de 3 generaciones: Moni, su madre, su hermana y sus dos hijos. No sé quien disfrutó más del evento, ellos creando o yo viendoles compartir estas horas juntos!
We took a break for lunch and enjoyed some amazing quiches and salads made by my mum. I am so upset that I forgot to take photos. I did remember to photograph dessert though. Hélène from Mi Taller de Reposteria made us a wonderful carrot cake, that looked just as good as it tasted! Thank you so much!
Nos tomamos un descanso para comer, disfrutando de unos quiches y ensaladas fabulosas que preparó mi madre. Estoy enfadadísima que olvidé sacar fotos. Al menos me acordé de sacarle fotos al postre. Hélène de Mi Taller de Repostería nos preparó unas tartas de zanahoria que fueron tan buenas como se veían. Muchas gracias Hélène! After lunch we continued with Neus’ Washi Tape workshop.

Neus, sharing, as she does so well. I cannot speak highly enough of this lady, she is so thoughtful, giving and creative.

A while ago I went to an organic fair in Porreres, in the center of the island. One of my friends had a stand there selling Local Seeds and they had a Luffa on their table. It is part of the melon and squash family but if you leave it to dry out you are left with a natural sponge that you can use in the bathroom or the kitchen. I was given some seeds and planted them in the garden but I have a small garden and had some seeds left over. I made a little seed packet with some pre-used gift wrap to save the seeds for next year.
Hace ya varios días fui a una feria ecológica en Porreras, en el centro de la isla. Una amiga trabaja guardando semillas locales y en su puesto tenían unas luffas. La planta viene de la familia de melones y calabacines pero si lo dejas secar te quedas con una esponja natural que puedes usar en el baño o la cocina. Me regalaron unas semillas que sembré en el jardín pero no tengo mucho espacio. Con los restos del papel de regalo que guardo hice un sobrecito para guardar las semillas sobrantes para el año que viene.
I recommend this tutorial for a much nicer job than I did. I just drew and cut out an envelope type shape and it worked well enough for me.
Recomiendo este tutorial si queréis hacer un trabajo más bonito. Yo dibujé y recorté un borrador de un sobre y eso fue suficiente para lo que necesitaba.
I folded the sides, glued them together and then glued the end over on one end.
Doblé los lados y los pegué en el centro. Luego doblé y pegué un extremo.
I wrote the name on the front and closed the back with a bit of washi tape. All ready for next year!
Añadí el nombre en la parte delantera y cerré el dorso con washi tape, todo listo para el año que viene!!
I’m not a good cook, I have a hard time following recipes, get easily distracted and often burn my food. This has left me with more than my fair share of pots and pans in really bad shape. When I started looking for non-toxic remedies, I read about the uses of baking soda and after one awful “burn” session, because cooking session would be an insult to what I was doing, I found a great solution. I had scrubbed the pot, added baking soda, and soaked it overnight to no avail. I was just about to give up when I decided to put all the previous attempts together on the heat to see if that helped. To my amazement the pot came completely clean. I went online to see how to share this fabulous discovery only to find that heating your pot with water and baking soda is a common solution. I just happened to add some drops of liquid dish soap to the mix. So, if you have a very dirty, stained or burnt pot I recommend you give this a shot, it is strangely satisfying.
No soy buena cocinera, me cuesta seguir recetas, me distraigo facilmente y quemo la comida frecuentemente. El resultado ha sido un montón de ollas en malas condiciones. Cuando empecé a buscar opciones de limpieza menos tóxicas lei sobre el uso de bicarbonato de sodio y después de una sesión de quemado, porque sesión de cocina sería un insulto, encontré una solución muy efectiva. Había fregado, remojado y limpiado la olla quemada con bicarbonato pero sin solución. Iba a tirar la olla cuando decidí juntar todos los esfuerzos anteriores y ponerla al fuego. Después de quemar la olla, la verdad es que volver a ponerlo al fuego no suena muy sensato, pero el resultado fue increíble. Busqué por internet y se ve que mi invento no es nuevo, si no bastante común, aunque mi versión es un poco diferente:
Alucino cada vez y la verdad es que te deja con un sentido muy satisfactorio!
Getting ready for the natural dye workshop this weekend.
Preparándome para el taller de tintes naturales este fin de semana.
I was talking to my older sister about the mint lemonade I made and she mentioned she had made something similar that friends of all ages raved about.
My hermana mayor y yo estábamos hablando sobre la limonada de menta que había preparado y me comentó que había preparado una bebida parecida que les ha encantado a sus amigos de todas las edades.
All you need is some fresh lemons and brown sugar (If you are in the U.S. and feeling lazy, my sister recommends using the brand Simply Lemonade instead) some mint leaves, some ice and some water. Ohh and a blender would be helpful too!
I used the juice of 4 lemons
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 cup of ice
6 large leaves of mint ( I like mine minty)
1/2 cup water
Todo lo que necesitas es limones, azúcar moreno (Si vives en EEUU y te sientes perezosa, mi hermana recomienda la marca Simply Lemonade en su lugar) unas hojas de menta o hierba buena, hielo y un poco de agua. Ahh y una licuadora batidora de mano.
Yo usé el sumo de 4 limones
2 cucharadas de azúcar
1 vaso de cubitos de hielo
6 hojas grandes de hierba buena (me gusta con saber fuerte a menta)
1/2 vase de agua
Put it all in the blender, mix and enjoy a very refreshing slushee!
Mételo todo en la licuadora batidora de mano, mézclalo y disfruta de un granizado súper refrescante.
