Walking over to my parents’ home I heard a sheep’s bleat. I went to investigate and it turns out there is a flock of sheep grazing by our home, on what must be the last plot of private land surrounding the castle.
Growing up, much of the land around the woods was owned by our neighbours. My older sister and I spent a lot of time in and around the woods and became quite good friends with the local shepherd, a boy just a few years older than ourselves. I’ve often wondered what became of him as the land was sold off to build new homes and a motorway was constructed right through the land where the sheep grazed.
The only shepherd I found on this occasion was a sleeping one, so I snuck in and spent some time amongst the hundreds of sheep. Many of them were very young lambs, some I’m pretty sure, just days old.

Camino a casa de mis padres oí el balido de una oveja. Fui a investigar y resulta que hay un rebaño de ovejas pastando al lado de nuestra casa, en lo que debe de ser la última parcela privada que rodea el castillo.
De pequeña, gran parte de la tierra que rodeaba el bosque era propiedad de nuestros vecinos. Mi hermana mayor y yo pasábamos mucho tiempo dentro y alrededor del bosque y nos hicimos amigas del pastor; un chico un poco mayor que nosotras. A menudo me he preguntado qué fue de él, cuando vendieron esas tierras para construir casas nuevas y una autopista que atraviesa la tierra donde las ovejas pastaban.
El único pastor que encontré en esta ocasión fue uno dormido, así que me metí y pasé un rato entre la multitud de ovejas. Muchos de ellos eran corderos muy jóvenes, diría que de pocos días.
