I have been following my friend, Lara Ginhson’s, film and photography career from afar. We met in London many years ago and and seem to chase each other around the world, very rarely coinciding. She just emailed me to say she was going to be in Mallorca and I am devastated to miss her again.
Sometimes you meet people and feel an instant connection, Lara was one of those people. I met her when I was going through a rough time and I’m pretty sure she is the reason I got through it! She has been such a huge part of my life, a contant source of support, even from so far, that when I found out I was pregnant I had no doubt that if it were a girl I would name her Lara.
It makes sense therefore, that I connect deeply with her latest body of work. I hope you enjoy it too.
He estado siguiendo la carrera fotográfica y cinematográfica de mi amiga, Lara Ginhson, desde lejos. Nos conocimos en Londres hace muchos años y, parece que nos perseguimos por el mundo, rara vez coincidiendo. Hace unos días me escribió para decirme que iba a estar en Mallorca y estoy deshecha al volver a perdérmela.
A veces al conocer a gente sientes una conexión instantánea. Así fue con Lara. La conocí cuando pasaba por un mal momento y estoy segura de que al no ser por ella, las cosas no habrían salido tan bien. Lara ha sido una parte muy importante de mi vida, un apoyo incondicional, aun desde tan lejos. Tanto que cuando me enteré de que estaba embarazada, sabía que si fuese niña, quería darle su nombre.
Es lógico, pues, que conecte profundamente con sus últimas obras. Espero que también os guste.

I have had an amazing month traveling and visiting friends and family but I miss the ease and comfort of home. I am a real homebody and was sure we would be settled into a new home by now. As it happens, due to some changes, it may be some time before that is possible. So yesterday, I finally opened up my suitcase and took out some of my favourite things. I started painting one of Tatiana’s stencils, which I was planning on embroidering, but the kids wanted to go to the park where I got side tracked by some sturdy leaves. No matter the results, the process was calming and helpful in dealing with my reality.
He pasado un mes increíble, viajando y visitando amigos y familiares, pero echo de menos la comodidad de casa. Soy muy hogareña y estaba convencida de que ya estaríamos en nuestra nueva casa. Debido a algunos cambios, puede que pase algún tiempo antes de que esto suceda, o sea que ayer, por fin, abrí mi maleta y saqué algunas de mis cosas favoritas. Empecé a pintar una de las plantillas de Tatiana, que tenía planeado bordar, pero los niños querían ir al parque donde unas hojas me distrajeron. Independientemente de los resultados, el proceso me relajó y me ayudó a aceptar la realidad.

Oak galls are abnormal growths on oak trees caused by certain wasps and their larvae. The growth, a chemical reaction that occurs as a defensive measure, also becomes both food and shelter for the larvae. Being high in tannic acid, the galls have been used to make inks and dyes for centuries and although I have used them before, for the last two years I have been buying the powdered form to make ink, as a mordant and a dye. I often talk about them in workshops but was never able to show participants what they looked like. This weekend I found an oak tree laden with galls and collected a few, which I will grind into a powder as soon as I have the opportunity.

El crecimiento, una reacción química que se produce como medida defensiva, también se convierte en alimento y refugio para las larvas. Al ser rico en ácido tánico, las agallas se han usado para crear tintas y colorantes durante siglos. Al no haber encontrado en Mallorca los había estado comprando en polvo para hacer tinta, como colorante y mordiente. A menudo hablo sobre las agallas en los talleres, pero nunca pude enseñaros como eran en su estado natural. Este fin de semana me encontré con un roble cargado de agallas y recogí unos cuantos que espero poder moler y usar pronto!

I have been a fan of Habu Textiles for a number of years but I had never been to their store in New York. Tatiana recommended a visit and I was not disappointed, though it certainly was not what I expected. The store, on the eighth floor, is a fairly dark room and is jam packed full of yarns, fabrics, notions and tools, all beautiful and quite unique. Here are some of my favourite details:

It was my nephew’s birthday last week and my sister organized a huge scavenger hunt with challenges at each stage. One of my favourite activities was face painting, it had never occurred to me to let the kids do each other’s faces and although the kids look quite serious in these photos, as they were really focused on their work, they had a whale of a time!
La semana pasada fue el cumpleaños de mi sobrino y mi hermana le organizó una búsqueda del tesoro con retos en cada etapa. Mi actividad favorita fue decoración facial, nunca se me había ocurrido que los niños se pintasen a si mismos y aunque salen algo serios en estas fotos, porque estaban muy enfocados en su trabajo, se lo pasaron pipa!
I love the water tanks you can see on top of so many buildings in New York. These can all be seen from my sister’s apartment.

I don’t like shopping and most people dislike going with me. My mum and my sisters have long since given up because I am so fussy and will not buy anything unless it is exactly what I need and love. Take for instance, my handbag. I have been actively looking for one for 3 years. I have been using a tote bag that I embroidered about 4 years ago and although I love it, it is now full of holes and was never the most convenient of bags to begin with; I could never find the item I needed when I needed it.
When I saw this bag that Arounna makes I fell in love, but not knowing whether the handles would sit comfortably on my shoulders (something that drives me crazy), I hesitated for 4 months! Then finally, in January, I decided to order it and had it sent to my sister in New York. So 3 years and a few months later I have a new handbag! And I couldn’t be happier. It is gorgeous, and like the canned jars that I used to stare at in my pantry, I keep looking at it sitting on the table, admiring it. It is convenient with an easy access pocket for items I need to take out frequently and light coloured lining that helps me find other items, and it is so, so comfortable, it just sits on my shoulder and feels like a part of me. That might be what makes me happiest!
No me gusta ir de compras y en general, a la gente no le gusta ir conmigo. Mi madre y mis hermanas se hartaron hace mucho tiempo porque soy muy exigente y no compro nada a menos que sea exactamente lo que necesito. Tomemos, por ejemplo, mi bolso. He estado buscando uno desde hace 3 años. Mientras tanto usaba un bolso de mano (un tote bag) negro que bordé hace unos 4 años, y aunque me encanta, está lleno de agujeros y nunca podía encontrar lo que necesitaba.
Cuando vi este bolso que vende Arounna me enamoré, pero al no saber si las asas se quedarían cómodamente sobre los hombros, dudé por 4 meses! Finalmente, en enero, decidí pedirlo y lo envié a casa de mi hermana en Nueva York. Así que 3 años y unos meses más tarde tengo un bolso nuevo! Y no podría estar más feliz. Es precioso, y al igual que los tarros llenos de conservas que solía mirar en mi despensa, lo miro sobre la mesa, admirándolo. Es muy práctico con un bolsillo de fácil acceso para las cosas que necesito sacar con frecuencia, un forro de color claro que me permite encontrarlo todo con facilidad y es súper cómodo, me lo cuelgo sobre el hombro y se queda allí pegado, como si fuese parte de mi, creo que esa es la parte que me hace más feliz!
Arounna’s blog was one of the first I started following and remains one of my favourites. I love that Bookhou is truly a family business, a multigenerational one and I enjoy hearing about her friendship with 3 other wonderful and creative bloggers: Geninne, Margie and Sonia. The way they support and encourage each other reminds me of my incredible friends.

It has been a few years since I did any canning but when I lived in California and did a lot of preserving I remember visiting my larder and opening the door with no other purpose than to simply enjoy the neat and colourful rows of jars. One of the things I missed the most while in Spain was my collection of canning jars that I used not only for canning but for general storage, refilling my bulk food items at the store, for drinking smoothies and a bunch of other uses. I’m not certain whether I will be settled somewhere in time to plant a garden this year but I’m still dreaming of all the preserving that might happen. In the mean time, I am using my sister’s empty jars to drink my smoothies.
Cuando vivía en California conservaba mucha comida cada año. Recuerdo ir a la despensa, abrir la puera con el único proposito de disfrutar de los tarros coloridos y alienados. Una de las cosas que había echado de menos era mi colección de tarros para conservar que usaba no solo para ese propósito si no que para almacenar, para comprar a granel, para beber mis batidos y para un montón de otros usos. No sé si llegaré a encontrar casa a tiempo para plantar este año pero estoy soñando con todas las conservas que podrían pasar. Mientras tanto estoy usando los tarros para beber mis batidos.
My current favourite smoothie: Pineapple Apple Mint
1 cup pineapple chunks (fresh or frozen)
1/2 green apple
3-4 mint leaves
1-2 teaspoons maple syrup
1 cup of water (you can use half water, half ice if using fresh pineapple, and add more water if needed)
Put all ingredients in the blender and blend.
Pass smoothie through a fine sieve and enjoy!
My batido favorito estos dias: Piña, manzana, menta
150gr piña (fresca o congelada)
1/2 manzana verde
3-4 hojas de menta
1-2 cucharaditas sirope de arce
1 vaso de agua (puedes usar mitad agua, mitad hielo si usas piña fresca y añadir más agua si necesitas)
Meter todos los ingredientes en la batidora y batir.
Pasar el líquido por un colador muy fino y ya, listo para disfrutar!
Running late to pick up my niece and nephew from school I walked (well, ran) past this store. I had to stop and take some photos and when I got home and looked them up I found they ship a large selection of natural dyes to Spain. It made me smile because although they ship from Germany, they have a site in Spanish, and that is something I spent 2 years looking for. Iit just took a trip to New York to find it! So, if you are looking for natural dye sources in Spain, you might want to look at Kremer. If you are in the US, you can visit their US site, or go to Dharma Trading, or Aurora Silk. In Canada visit Maiwa (check out their amazing selection of workshops too) and in the UK try George Weil or Wild Colours.
Camino al cole de mis sobrinos, pasé por esta tienda que me llamó la atención. No pude entrar porque llegaba tarde para recogerlos, pero saqué unas cuantas fotos y al llegar a casa me puse a investigar. Llevaba dos años buscando una tienda de plantas tintoreras en España y aunque los envios vienen de Alemania, lá página está en español. Me pareció gracioso que fue durante una visita a Nueva York, que por fin encontré lo que no pude desde España. Si tenéis ganas de experimentar os recomiendo que visitéis la sección de tintes naturales de Kremer. También podéis encontrar Alumbre para fijar la tela, y para aquellos con un poco más de experiencia, Agallas!
I love how much nature my sister has chosen to bring in to her homes. She studied interior design at Parsons and although some of these photos remind me of the perfectly manicured houses you see in magazines, you definitely feel the comfort of home when you are there.

Just in time for Eath Day 2013 I found a copy of a booklet I made for friends and family about 4 years ago. I wrote it with the idea of sharing easy changes we can make to our lives in order to make them simpler, cheaper and more thoughtful of our Earth. I lost my digital copy so this was a special find. Happy Earth Day!
Justo a tiempo para El Día de La Tierra 2013 encontré una copia de una libreta que hice para amigos y familiares hace unos 4 años. La escribí con la intención de compartir cambios fáciles que podemos hacer a nuestras vidas para vivir de manera más simple, barata y tomando más en cuenta nuestra Tierra. Perdí mi copia digital o sea que fue un encuentro especial. Feliz Día de La Tierra.
We’ve been doing a lot of walking in the city and my daughter is going through a growth spurt, so I have been making these snacks to keep us going between meal times.
The recipe is based on snackaroons, a snack I used to buy in California but which I have not found in stores for some time. I would definitely add shredded coconut for bulk and texture to the recipe, I just did not have any on hand.
Hemos estado caminando mucho por la ciudad y mi hija esta creciendo o sea que hemos estado preparando este tentempié para darnos energía entre comidas.
La receta está basada en este producto que compraba en California pero que no he encontrado en tiendas en bastante tiempo. Recomiendo añadir coco rallado a la receta para darle consistencia y textura, pero no tenía a mano. No parece importar porque mi hija y sobrinos los devoran igual!
Recipe
1 cup organic almonds (I used raw, germinated and dehydrated)
3 organic dates
1.5 teaspoons coconut oil (I used raw, organic, extra virgin)
.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt (I used Pink Himalayan)
Receta
150gr almendras ecológicas (yo usé crudas, germinadas y desidratadas)
3 dátiles ecológicos
1.5 cucharitas de aceite de coco ecológico (yo usé crudo y extra virgen)
.5 cucharita de extracto de vainilla
1 pizca de sal (yo usé una sal rosa de Himalaya)
Roughly grind the almonds if they are whole. - Trocear las almendras si están enteras.
Add the dates and grind again. – Añadir los dátiles y volver a moler.
Pour the nuts and dates into a bowl, add the coconut oil and vanilla and mix. - Verter las almendras y dátiles en un tarro, añadir el aceite de coco y vainilla y mezclar.
Add a pinch of salt and mix again. – Añadir una pizca de sal y volver a mezclar.
Make little balls with the mixture and they are ready to eat. Hacer bolitas con la mezcla y están listas para comer.
Update – Actualización
The next version we did, we added the shredded coconut, about 3 tablespoons! It is a definite improvement!

I was delighted to find that Lotta Jansdotter was offering a workshop in her Brooklyn Studio while I was in NY, so last Saturday, still a little groggy from all the travel, I spent a lovely afternoon printing with potatoes, stamps and stencils with a charming group of women. I did not take many photos as I was enjoying the experience but here are a few peeks of Lotta teaching, the lovely studio and shop space and the results of some of the participants’ projects. I’d love to thank Lotta, Laura and Maja for being fabulous hosts and providing so much inspiration!
Me alegré mucho al enterarme que Lotta Jansdotter iba a ofrecer un taller en su estudio de Brooklyn justamente durante mi visita a NY o sea que el sábado pasado, aun medio dormida del viaje, pasé una tarde muy agradable entre unas mujeres muy creativas, imprimiendo con patatas, gomas y plantillas. No saqué muchas fotos ya que estaba disfrutando de la experiencia pero aquí tenéis unas imagenes de Lotta enseñando, del precioso estudio y la tienda y los resultados de los proyectos de los participantes. Last week we said our goodbyes to Mallorca. Leaving this beautiful island, our family and friends has been tough but there is always something positive and I am lucky enough to be spending some time with my sister in New York. The photos are from my last walk in the Bellver Woods with my younger sister and walks around Manhattan with my older sister.
La semana pasada, con mucha tristeza, le dijimos adios a Mallorca. Despedirnos de esta preciosa isla, de familia y de amigos nos ha costado mucho, pero siempre se encuentra el lado positivo y ahora tengo la suerte de disfrutar de unas semanas con mi hermana en Nueva York. Las fotos de esta entrada son de mi último paseo en el Bosque de Bellver con mi hermana menor y de paseos por Manhattan con mi hermana mayor.
I visited Mar and Cristina again last week and showed their children how to make the clay gift tags. Sharing always brings new ideas and on this occasion Mar suggested using her sea urchins and succulents to make impressions. I loved the results and continued making more when I got home. These will be the new gift tags that wrap the lip balm and natural dye kits.
La semana pasada volví a a visitar a Mar y a Cristina y les enseñe a sus hijos a hacer las etiquetas de arcilla. Compartir siempre trae nuevas ideas y en esta ocasión Mar sugirió usar sus erizos de mar y sus suculentas para hacer impresiones. Me encantaron los resultados y continué haciendo etiquetas al volver a casa, serán las nuevas etiquetas para los kits de bálsamos y de tintes naturales.
